President wants technology - What Does the Power Sector Wants

The Dominican Power Sector needs to jump into the "information society" bandwagon called for by President Fernandez. Government and private agents need to change their mental models, by unlearning their Second Wave knowledge. This is what DR1 has informed today:

President Leonel Fernandez has proposed the creation of an "information society" that would bring about a leap in the country's economic and social development. The President outlined his ideas at the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) monthly luncheon. Fernandez pointed out that progress depends on information technologies and communication and the government, the private sector and civil society need to join forces and push the Dominican Republic towards cyberspace.

The President announced special facilities for the first 100 technological companies to establish themselves in the DR as well as incentives for companies to conduct e-commerce. The President also said that he wants to promote technological industrial free zones similar to the Cybernetic Park near Boca Chica. The Chief Executive also rejected the government's role in promoting technology since -in his view - in order for this to be successful it has to be the exclusive terrain of the private sector.
